The number of undocumented migrants in the United States has dropped from its peak of 12.2 million in 2007 to an estimated 10.5 million in 2017,56 with Mexicans now representing less than half of the total undocumented population in the United States (see table 7.3). Tighter border security has likely meant that individuals have not wanted to risk the dangers of future border crossings, given increased border security and the greater likelihood of apprehension. Beyond border enforcement, the global recession that started in late 2007 likely had a significant effect, with the number of undocumented workers declining as the recession took hold. Concurrently, while Mexicans have traditionally been the largest source of undocumented workers coming to the United States, Mexico’s economy has improved at the same time that its population growth has slowed and aged. Improved economic prospects have meant that fewer Mexicans need to leave in search of employment.
